Our approach and what we stand for

Our approach to working in education and international development is one of reflective praxis. We believe that policy and practice should always be informed by research, and inform every stage of the research process in turn.

We pay attention to detail without losing sight of the big picture. Accordingly, we do not pretend to ‘let data speak for itself’, but pay attention to where the data come from, and build on our analyses to develop an overall argument or narrative.

Praxis is where theory meets practice, where action is informed by and informs critical reflection and research.

We bring to our work an understanding of and a desire to challenge the problematic power differentials at play in the sector, including at the global level. At any given time, therefore, we aim to meet and work with our clients and the diverse groups they engage with at eye level.

We accept ambiguity and are open to multiple perspectives, while recognising that many situations pose an action problem where a choice between discrete alternatives has to be made. In making these choices, we always ‘show our working’, providing a clear rationale for why we have done what we have done.

Compared to a large company, you get fast decisions and nimble responsiveness to your needs, and you know exactly who will perform your task — the two of us! Even when it comes to our own individual projects, the other is always on hand to act as a second pair of eyes and contingency back-up, which means you get peer quality assurance for free.
